Study Checklist

A simple process you can reuse for any religion to stay fair, organized, and accurate.

Checklist

StepWhat to doTip
1Learn the religion’s own key terms and self‑description.Start with an overview page and primary sources.
2Identify core texts and how they are used (scripture, commentary, tradition).Ask: “Is this text central for this community?”
3Map beliefs vs practices vs culture.Don’t treat cultural customs as universal doctrine.
4Study internal diversity (schools, denominations, movements).Find at least 2 perspectives inside the tradition.
5Compare using consistent categories (ethics, worship, afterlife, authority).Avoid “category mistakes” (e.g., assuming identical concepts).
6Write a neutral summary in your own words.Use “Many adherents believe…” where appropriate.
7Verify with reliable references.Prefer primary texts + reputable academic sources.
Quick rule: If you can’t explain a belief in the way an informed adherent would recognize, keep studying.
